Who We Are

South Somerset Primary Care Trust (PCT) provides community and primary care health services to a population of 150,000 people. We have approximately 700 staff who cover an area similar to South Somerset District Council (excluding Bruton) and includes Chard, Ilminster, Langport and surrounding areas.

Primary Care Trusts have responsibility for all health care locally, and increasing the range of service providers so that local people can choose what they want for themselves and their families.

Trust Board

The work of the Primary Care Trust is led and directed by its Board. The Board is responsible for the policies, strategies and performance of the Trust. It ensures that the Professional Executive Committee is performing effectively, that high standards of conduct are maintained and that local patients’ needs and interests are taken into account. For these reasons, the Board has seven lay people as Non Executive Directors as well as a lay Chairman.

The Board has four main functions, which are:

  • Promoting the success of the Trust by directing and supervising its affairs.
  • Providing active leadership whilst ensuring there are sound and effective controls that enable any risks to be assessed and managed
  • Setting the Trust’s strategic aims (link to further down the page), ensuring that the necessary funds and staff are in place to meet its objectives, and reviewing management performance.
  • Setting the organisation’s values and standards and ensuring that its obligations to patients, the local community and the Secretary of State are understood and met.

The Board and Professional Executive Committee are supported in their work by the Executive Management Team and a range of committees each of which brings together the professional skills and experience necessary to ensure the Trust discharges its duties properly and effectively.

The Trust has Board meetings every month except for August, These meetings are open to the public and are held throughout South Somerset so everyone has the opportunity to attend.

Each meeting has Board Papers, which contain the agenda, minutes of previous meetings and items to be discussed.

Trust Board papers are available in Public Libraries, at the Board Meetings and to anyone who requests them. We also produce a summary of the Board meetings called Trust Board Briefings, which you may find useful.

You can request copies of the Board papers or the Trust Board Briefing by contacting us at the address below.
