Previously known as St. Peters Hospital the hospital was extensively redeveloped in 1998. Over 6,000 people use the minor injury unit and over 400 people were admitted to Fosse Ward during the year. Consultants lead the upgraded minor surgery suite and the clinics from Yeovil and Bath hospitals.
Fosse Ward is a 13-bed unit for male and female patients and is covered by the five local GP surgeries at Evercreech, Oakhill, Bruton and two at Shepton Mallet. A multi-disciplinary team is involved in all aspects of care.
Facilities at Shepton Mallet Hospital include Minor Injuries Unit, X-ray department, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, outpatients department and community nursing teams.
Our Minor Injuries Unit is led by Nurse Practitioners, and is open
from 9.00am until 8.00pm - seven days a week, including Bank Holidays. The nursing staff work to continuously update their skills and see and treat more than 60% of all casualties. This service is ever expanding, particularly with the re-arrangement of the GP out of hours service.
Minor surgery is carried out approximately once a month, which includes vasectomy and hernia repair.
Outpatients clinics are held on a regular, mostly monthly basis with consultants from Yeovil and Bath hospitals attending for approximately 18 clinics.
New Services
In December 2004 Shepton Mallet Hospital commenced providing Stroke
Services for Mendip Primary Care Trust. The new Stroke Unit offers
eight intensive rehabilitation beds for patients from the Mendip area
who have suffered a stroke. In addition there is an outreach community
service led by the Stroke Co-ordinator.
