CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE - COPD

Somerset Primary Care Trust is working to design more community based health support to people with chronic lung problems caused by conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis and smoking.

Almost 8,000 people in Somerset are already affected with chronic breathing problems, known collectively as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The condition affects the lives of sufferers, many of whom live with ill health for all of their lives.

Community Hospitals

Somerset Primary Care Trust manages a number of Community Hospitals. Services provided at Community Hospitals include minor injuries units, out-patient care, minor surgery, rehabilitation, and care for older people and for patients being monitored by their GPs. They form a link between GP and community nursing services and the resident population of Somerset.

Independent Sector Treatment Centre

Somerset PCT also oversees the work of an Independent Sector Treatment Centre which provides treatment for conditions such as cataract surgery, hip and knee replacement or general surgery, such as hernia repairs with short waiting times.
