The
completion of of Somerset's first independent sector NHS
Treatment Centre now offers Somerset and North Dorset
NHS patients choice and treatment of the highest quality.
Clinically suitable patients from across Somerset and
North Dorset, who require treatment for conditions such as
cataract surgery, hip and knee replacement or general
surgery, such as hernia repairs, will now be able to
benefit from the choice of referral to the new centre.
The first out patient appointments were booked for the 18th July, with the first surgery being
performed on the 15th August, 2005.
Although constructed, managed and staffed by UK
Specialist Hospitals, the facility has been commissioned
to treat NHS patients. More than 30 independent sector
treatment centres are now operating in England with more
to follow. They form part of a major Government initiative
to increase capacity within the NHS, driving down waiting

UK Specialist Hospitals (and its contractor Yorkon),
completed the 34 bed Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre
in less than ten months using state-of-the-art modern
construction techniques. Fabrication of building units
off-site meant faster construction than conventional
building methods.
UK Specialist Hospitals (UK SH) has recruited high
quality staff mainly from Europe and the UK and it has
developed the policies and procedures that should ensure
patients receive excellent care in clean, modern
facilities.
UKSH has worked with its clinical partner, the
prestigious New York Presbyterian Health Care System, the
largest not-for-profit provider of healthcare in the US,
to deliver this state of the art treatment centre on time
and on budget for the NHS.
